Metalbird founder and designer, Phil Walters, opened up to us about his past experiences and how Metalbirds have significance to him when it comes to remembrance.
Phil says:
10 years ago when I started the street art project that has become Metalbird, I had no idea or plan as to how my creations would find their way in the world.
For me they were whimsical things of beauty intended to surprise, delight and intrigue the casual observer with the sharp eye.
My life changed when I lost my wife and the mother of my two children to a rare cancer in August 2012 . It really sucked and still does today.
Part of my healing process became visiting the places we used to love to have fun with friends, places like cafes, bars, restaurants, parks and even schools. I started installing a bird in an adjacent tree to remember her.
I still see them years later around the place and I like thinking back to the fun & mischief we used to get up to. It's a comforting positive experience.
In a very real way people from most walks of life have embraced them for a similar reason and in particular there a real resonance with remembering those people who are important to them. I get at least two emails a week from people who have used a Metalbird as a small silent memorial. I sure hope they get the some comfort like I have.
Metalbirds make great gifts to remember the ones that you love, whether it be their favourite bird, or a memory of them that you cherish.
