Two Turtle Doves
From the classic Christmas song to Shakespeare’s poem, cultural references to turtle doves have been going on for centuries and for many people their purring ‘turr turr’ song from the hedgerows is the sound of summer. But populations of these legendary doves have declined hugely in the last 10 years mainly, it’s thought, due to weed-free farming (weed seeds are the turtle dove’s dish of the day) and being shot for the pot during their 5,000km migration to Sub-Saharan Africa. Long live the turtle dove, and the romance they inspire.
