The majestic Great Horned owl carries symbolism and great meaning to many. Ancient cultures passed down stories about the owl’s wisdom, intelligence, patience and virtue.
As an artist, I designed this beautiful bird as a tribute to the guidance and protection these beautiful creatures offer. Any complex feather pattern, that mix of dark and light camouflage, is always hard to capture in steel, but I feel our Great Horned Owl turned out really well and was very happy to do this special bird justice.
A sentimental gift is one with deep meaning and I hope our wise Great Horned Owl brings that joy to your home, or that of a loved one and will last a lifetime.
It was a last minute gift idea for my husband who likes owls. I ordered one day and it arrived the next day with enough time to wrap it and get it under the tree. We found a great spot for it and I will be getting more for others as gifts

I bought my brother & sister-in-law the owl for their horse farm in S.C. I was a little hesitant to direct ship a gift that I personally had not seen...When I saw how sturdy & nicely crafted it was during our Christmas facetime I was thrilled.

Metalbird grew from a New Zealand Street Art Project I started back in 2009. I created and installed cool metal bird silhouettes around my neighborhood just for fun. People loved them, wanted them and 10 years later Metalbird has become a global art project.
Doing the right thing by our customers, staff, suppliers and the environment is super important to us.
To start with, we make and ship locally right here in the US. Our Corten®️ Steel has over 70% recycled content, and all scrap steel from our manufacturing process is recycled. On top of that, our packaging is made from recycled cardboard with biodegradable inks, designed to be recycled again and again.
Our company goal is to be B Corp certified by 2022. B Corp Certification doesn’t just evaluate a product or service; it assesses the overall positive impact of the company that stands behind it. And we know that’s what you care about most.
We love what we do. We hope it shows.
Give something that will delight. From unboxing to installation, we have made sure to make the experience simple and delightful.
Don’t settle for less. Created in weather-resistant Corten® Steel, the same material for famous outdoor art like the Chicago Picasso and Alamo in New York.
Our Great Horned Owl is:
We aim to have orders placed before midday shipped the same day but almost always, they'll be shipped within two business days to ensure you receive your Metalbird promptly.
The short answer is 'yes'. The better answer is our birds are made from Premium Corten® Steel which is a weathering steel. It's designed to develop a patina that then seals in the steel providing it with long term protection against the elements. We started the business 10 years ago in New Zealand and birds installed at the start still look great today with a beautiful patina that shifts with the season.
While anything that breaks the bark of a tree provides an opportunity for infection, in 10 years of running this project around the world we have yet to hear of a single tree that has died as a result of one of our birds being nailed into it. Our original birds are a decade old and the trees are showing no long-term damage whatsoever.
The spike on our birds is driven firmly in with little room to allow infection. Over time the tree will seal off around where the bird has been installed to protect itself from disease.
We're not saying that it's not a potential issue. We're just saying that we don't believe it’s a big issue. Our birds look great installed into fences, posts, or even indoors! Choose a spot that feels right to you.
Best way to remove safely is to grab the 'branch' with a pair of pliers and gently tap the pliers with a hammer in the direction of the way it has been attached. Be careful not to wiggle it as this can cause damage! After your bird has been removed, add prune paste or honey into the hole if its on a tree.
Yes! Please note though, for purchases outside of the USA, Metalbird is not responsible for taxes, customs charges, duties, and restrictions that vary from country to country and result from the importation of certain products.
